Aberdeen wish Man Utd great Ferguson 'a long and happy retirement'

Aberdeen Football Club have released a statement wishing Sir Alex Ferguson all the best for the future.

The 71-year old led the Dons to three Scottish titles, four Scottish Cups, one Scottish League Cup, the 1983 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup during his spell at Pittodrie between 1978 and 1986 before he moved on to Manchester United.

"Everyone at Aberdeen Football Club wishes Sir Alex a long and happy retirement following this morning's announcement," read the Aberdeen statement after Ferguson called time on his managerial career on Wednesday.

"His contribution, both to Manchester United and Aberdeen, will quite simply never be matched, and it is fitting in many ways, that he has confirmed that he is stepping down just three days before the 30th anniversary of that never to be forgotten night in Gothenburg (when the Dons beat Real Madrid 2-1)."
