Aberdeen trials for 31yo amateur Heuvel

Aberdeen are handing trials to 31 year-old Dutch amateur Arafath Heuvel.

The winger hails from De Treffers and will have month-long trials with Aberdeen.

"I think we are still a wee bit short and when the chance to have a look at Arafath came up I thought we should take it," Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood told the P&J. "He played for Groningen a few years ago, he has pace and knows the game. He can play up front or wide on the left."

Scott Calderwood, son of the Aberdeen manager, has been busy scouting for talent in Holland.

The Dons had hoped to sign amateur Robert Fik but the forward turned down the offer of a one-year deal after passing a medical.

Fellow striker Dyron Daal joined Aberdeen from Holland on amateur terms last year but failed to break into the first-team and has since joined St Johnstone.

On Heuvel, Calderwood added: "The fact he is very quick and plays in both positions is the attraction.

"He was due to go on a cruise next week and the fact he has cancelled to come to Aberdeen says a lot about the lad.

"I saw him play as a youngster and he looked as if he was going to go all the way to the top."
