Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee has revealed he axed Dons legend Jim Leighton because he needs more than just a goalkeeping coach. McGhee said: "Jim is a long-time friend and a former colleague and I could never stress enough how difficult a decision it was from a personal point of view."
He added: "But, from a professional point of view, I'm looking at maximising any resources I have at my disposal and what I need from those resources is flexibility.
"Jim is a specialist goalkeeping coach and I, at this moment in time, can't afford that.
"If I'm going to bring someone else in, it will have to be someone who can do more than just coach the goalkeepers on the training ground.
"I've got to try to maximise those resources in order to get all the bits of my team together that I need.
"I have a picture in my head of what I would like and it would be someone who can offer more than just being a goalkeeping coach, someone who brings other things, other qualifications, other abilities.
"I think we are one short anyway with Scott Leitch and I. Any club I've been at, I've worked with three, with an assistant and a coach. Here, it's only Scott and I.
"Even more so, we need someone who can do more for us than simply be the goalkeeping coach."
