"Hutchinson is someone we were looking at ourselves a couple of weeks ago and I know his agent very well," said Calderwood. "I know for a fact Middlesbrough thought very highly of him.

"Jimmy Nicholl [Aberdeen's assistant manager] and I went down and saw Middlesbrough reserves get beaten by Liverpool.

"Josh was probably their best player and we knew of young Ben as well.

"But at that moment in time he was involved in new contract talks with Middlesbrough.

"Gordon got in and nicked him, and I think it's a good piece of work."
