Led by a Robbie Fowler hat-trick, the Glory were far too good for Melbourne Victory, winning 3-1 to get their season back on track.
The ex-Liverpool star was inspirational for his side, scoring once in the first half after his initial penalty kick was saved by Victory keeper Michael Petkovic, before adding two in the second term to wrap up the three points.
He was greatly assisted by club captain Jacob Burns who ran the show in the centre of the pitch with promising defender Scott Neville brushing off a heavily corked thigh to play his part after a strong performance in the midweek loss to Adelaide United on Wednesday.
A high-scoring week for the A-League saw 25 goals put away from 7 matches (including the midweek fixtures on the 10th) with Central Coast Mariners left-back Joshua Rose the surprise packet with a brace in his side’s 3-0 win over Wellington Phoenix.
He was joined by Joel Porter who netted a double for Gold Coast United in their 3-1 triumph over Sydney FC whilst Melbourne Heart big man Gerald Sibon scored two quality goals for the week – the first a sublime turn and finish in the 3-2 win over North Queensland Fury before adding another in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Brisbane Roar.
Other notable performances came from Newcastle Jets defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley who controlled the back third and also managed to get on the scoresheet as his side bounced back to form with a 3-1 home win over Adelaide United whilst Gold Coast skipper Jason Culina was the architect of his team’s win with a goal and an assist.
