A-League no deterrent for Porter's national team hopes

Gold Coast United striker Joel Porter says he has not hurt his Socceroos chances by joining and A-League club.

Porter enjoyed a brilliant season with English League One club Hartelpool, scoring 23 goals, but after seven seasons abroad thought it was best to try his luck in his home country.

"It's one of the main reasons I decided to come home and I haven't given up hope of pushing myself into World Cup contention," he said.

"I went to England as a 23-year-old hoping it would be a springboard into the national team. It hasn't worked out but I haven't given up hope and I'm sure if I keep scoring and playing well in the A-League my chance may come.

"If it does there's no way I'll be letting it go.

"The number one thing in the world is to play for your country.

"You have the likes of Craig Moore who's playing for Australia and, of course, there will be Jason Culina alongside me at the Gold Coast, which shows that being in the A-League shouldn't be an impediment to getting in the national team.

"My job will be to show Pim Verbeek that I'm worthy of consideration. Goals will be the key and after the season I've just had I'm feeling confident."
