A-League 2009/10 preview – Adelaide United

Adelaide United will be looking to go one better in 2009/10 after going down to Melbourne Victory in last season’s Grand Final.

Aurelio Vidmar has lured some quality players to Hindmarsh Stadium but has lost some experienced heads in the process.

The biggest signing would be that of Ghanaian-born English striker Lloyd Owusu from League Two club Cheltenham Town who is sure to make an impact up forward in a Reds side that lacked goal scoring power last term.

Midfielder Adam Hughes has joined from Irish club Drogheda United whilst the loss of key defender Sasa Ognenovski to Korea has been covered by former Sydney FC centre-half Iain Fyfe.

The promising Joe Costa has been promoted to the senior list and will improve further with exposure in the top flight and although an unknown quantity, Korean recruit Inseob Shin may prove to be an important player in midfield.

Some familiar faces including Paul Agostino, Jason Spagnuolo, Jonas Salley, Angelo Costanzo and Ognenovski departed the club in the off-season but Vidmar is confident that his list has enough depth to take on the best teams in the A-League, and the performance (2-1 loss) against a close-to-full-strength Melbourne Victory yesterday proves that.

The Reds have every chance to finish in the top few but with two new teams entering the fray in 2009/10, improved performances will be paramount.
