5 players Arsenal could sign to replace Mesut Ozil

Contract negotiations regarding Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil at Arsenal have now been stalled until the end of the season.

Arsenal fans are unsure of a lot of things right now, but Sanchez and Ozil's respective futures sit at the very top of the uncertainties surrounding the Gunners.

Whilst Sanchez has highlighted his importance this term, Ozil has experienced a rather alarming dip in form.

The 28-year-old has scored five goals and registered four assists in 22 Premier League appearances. Whilst Ozil is not much of a goalscorer, his assist tally generally tends to be higher than 10 at this point of a season.

The World Cup winner has failed to produce the goods with regularity in 2016/17 which has, in turn, hurt Arsenal's season.

Nonetheless, he remains a quality player and one that the Gunners will want to retain beyond this summer.

But if Ozil does happen to depart the Emirates Stadium, we have identified five players Arsenal could sign if they fail to keep hold of his services:

Ross Barkley - Everton

Barkley can't be referred to as a wonderkid anymore as he's well past that stage of his career.

He hasn't been consistent enough for Everton over the past few years, but the advent of Ronald Koeman has seen him up his game this season.

After a slow start to the term, Koeman managed to revitalise Barkley who now appears to be in arguably the best form of his career.

Arsenal are currently being linked with a £35million move for the 24-year-old who has notched four goals and seven assists so far this season.

Should the move go through, Barkley would prove to be a decent replacement for Ozil.

Miralem Pjanic - Juventus

Despite not enjoying a glittering first season at Juventus, Pjanic has made some invaluable contributions to the Bianconeri's title charge.

His time at Roma saw him become one of the best players to have graced the Serie A in recent years, and that form could yet be replicated in England should Arsenal make a move for him in the summer.

The Gunners were linked with a transfer for the 26-year-old during the January transfer window.

Pjanic's ability from dead-ball situations along with his creativity would make him an ideal signing for Arsenal.

Marco Reus - Borussia Dortmund

Reus is one player every Premier League fan would love to see ply his trade in the top tier of English football.

The Dortmund man has been on the Gunners' radar for quite some time now, but with a wind of change set to pass through the Emirates, Arsenal may finally lure Reus to the Premier League.

Individually, Reus has enjoyed large amounts of success in the Bundesliga, but as a Dortmund player, he's yet to receive a league winners' medal due to Bayern Munich's dominance in the German top flight.

Whilst Arsenal's last league title came 13 years ago, the parity in the Premier League makes them more likely to clinch a league trophy than Dortmund who continue to be second best in the Bundesliga.

Lorenzo Insigne - Napoli

With the form Insigne is currently on, he's unlikely to be a Napoli player come next season.

He's one of the main reasons Napoli's free-scoring style of play has been so successful this term. His ability to confuse defenders with mazy runs as well as the skill to go past them with consummate ease would serve him well in the Premier League.

The Italy international has scored 12 league goals this season and also laid on seven assists for his teammates.

Ozil and Insigne aren't exactly similar players, but the latter could add a new dimension to Arsenal's attack.

Gylfi Sigurdsson - Swansea City

I believe that Gylfi Sigurdsson should be playing for a top-four side, and with Arsenal potentially in the market for an attacking midfielder, why not take a punt on a player that has been consistent for Swansea over the past few seasons.

Sigurdsson would fit right into Arsenal's XI as he knows the league well, he possesses plenty of technical ability and most of all he's a proven Premier League player.

The Iceland international is undoubtedly the best player that is currently in a modest side. His skillset is similar to Ozil's; thus he's certainly a player Arsenal should consider signing.

Sigurdsson has plundered eight goals and 11 assists in the league for Swansea this season, and he continues to play a key role in his side's attempt to avoid relegation.
