Arsenal rocked by Campbell decision to choose Newcastle

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been rocked by Sol Campbell's decision to sign with Newcastle United.

The London Evening Standard says the Gunners were confident of keeping Campbell at Emirates Stadium after the 35-year-old had privately indicated he would agree a new 12-month deal once returning from his honeymoon.

Campbell married Fiona Barrett on 17 July in Northumberland and has been absent from Arsenal's pre-season training camp in Austria as he considered his future while abroad.

And it is understood the centre-back's new wife has convinced him to settle down in her native North-East as they look to start a family in the future.

Campbell underwent a medical at St James' Park yesterday morning and is expected to sign a two-year deal in the next 24 hours.
