Arsenal heroes fume over Adebayor slap on wrist

Arsenal identities can't believe the slap on the wrist Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor was handed for his provocative goals celebrations last month.

Arsenal identities can't believe the slap on the wrist Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor was handed for his provocative goals celebrations last month.

Adebayor was yesterday fined £25,000 and given a suspended two-match ban for running 90 yards and celebrating his goal against his old club in City's 4-2 win at Eastlands last month.

The Togo star had already been banned for three games for stamping on Arsenal's Robin van Persie during the highly-charged clash.

Furious former Gunners skipper Frank McLintock said: "Normally I don't like to see a player get suspended, but I think another two games would have been right.

"I'm surprised the FA didn't take the opportunity to come down on him a bit stronger - £25,000 is just a fraction of his wages and he and Mark Hughes will be delighted.

"It's the first time, in all my years of football, that I have seen a player run the length of the pitch and throw himself at the fans of a club he has just left.

"I thought, considering Arsenal had brought him along and just given him the £80,000 a week he demanded, that he might have a bit more respect.

"I don't know where all the anger came from towards Arsenal."

Former Gunners striker Perry Groves was baffled by the FA verdict.

He said: "When Gary Neville got done for celebrating in front of Liverpool fans last year he didn't get a suspended ban, so the FA, who we all want to show consistency, have gone beyond that.

"The FA have said, 'You're out of order, do anything like it again and your banned', which is fair enough. But to go right to the end of the pitch is bordering on incitement."
