Agent admits Man Utd see Defour as Scholes successor

Manchester United are on the brink of a deal for Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour.

Manchester United are on the brink of a deal for Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour.

The Sunday Mirror says Sir Alex Ferguson is a known admirer of the Belgian midfielder who despite being just 22 is already captain of Standard Liege.

A potential big-money move to England was put on hold after he broke a bone in his foot last September.

Manchester United boss Fergie took the unusual step of writing to Defour to tell him to keep his chin up - a clear sign Fergie is also keeping a close eye on the Belgian.

Now Defour's agent has confirmed a January move could be on the cards, and has suggested he could be the ideal replacement for Paul Scholes in the United midfield.

“Yes I think he can play this position, it is natural for him. But it is not up to me to decide if he can play in that position,” Paul Stefani told Sport.co.uk.

“It is very early in Defour’s return from injury, and it is early to talk about a transfer, but January is a possibility for him.

“He is playing very well and is the leader of the side, everyone is very impressed with him at the moment. So you never know in football, a move could be possible."
