Adelaide United’s Leckie named Young Footballer of September
Adelaide United young gun Mathew Leckie has been named the NAB Young Footballer of the Month for September.
The 19-year old has been in devastating form in recent weeks as the league leading Reds have maintained their great start to the season.
Three goals in four matches from Leckie has been the catalyst for Adelaide’s undefeated run in the opening eight games of the 2010/11 campaign and he was delighted to have been nominated for the A-League’s Young Player of the Year award.
“It’s an honour to be nominated for this award again, it’s a great award,” Leckie said. “It has been a great start to the Hyundai A-League season for us, and to be equal top scorer with Sergio (van Dijk) is a good feeling, the individual awards are great but the team doing so well is even better.
“I’d like to thank NAB, obviously it is just something that comes along the way when you’re playing, and I’ll just keep playing as best as I can.”
Leckie is the second nominated player to be announced, following North Queensland Fury’s Chris Payne receiving the nod for his August efforts, and will be joined in future weeks by five more U/21 players to qualify to be named the NAB Young Footballer of the Year at the Hyundai A-League Awards.
The overall winner will receive a $10,000 personal investment portfolio, a NAB Private Client Manager to assist with a range of banking and financial services, and the inaugural NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award.
To acknowledge the vital role junior football clubs play in the development of today’s young stars as they strive to reach their potential, NAB will also present a $3,000 equipment pack to Mathew Leckie’s nominated junior club, Brimbank Stallions Football Club (Victoria).
