Adelaide’s Vidmar: A-League cubs need to get tougher on player fees

Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar believes clubs need to get tougher on their valuation of players.

Recently, the Reds lost key defender Sasa Ognenovski to Korean club Seongnam Ilhwa for $350,000 which Vidmar believes is nothing in this day and age.

“I think we all had the best interests of the player at hand, but I think $350,000 was way, way short for someone of his playing ability and the demands of his position," said Vidmar.

"It was disappointing that he was allowed to go for such a small amount.

"I think everyone (A-League clubs) needs to get a lot tougher in terms of asking exactly what a player is worth. If clubs don't want to pay it, then tough luck.

"I am all for strengthening the league and giving players more money but there has to be a certain realism about salary demands. We still want the league to be here in 10 years,” he added.
